This fall, Delta Delta chapter hosted its first major fundraising event, Haunted Healthcare. Since this event was designed to be like a fair, with many smaller events involved, the manpower necessary was large. Luckily, with 77 dedicated brothers and pledges it was well within the ability of the Delta Delta chapter to host. Working together to stage this event helped unite everyone together and brought the chapter closer as a whole.
The headliner of the event was the haunted house, “Study Hall”. Brothers built, decorated, made sound effects, and acted in the haunted house. In the process of planning and implementing the haunted house, the creative talents of many Delta Delta brothers were revealed. Brother Amit Patel designed a horrifying lecture hall, working together with brother Lucía Curihuamán to splice cuts of actual lectures by chapter advisor Dr. Randell Doty into a hair-raising horror reel. Then-pledges Jace Colina and Jonathan Dacosta showed true craftsmanship and dedication in their time spent constructing props and walls for the house. Then-pledge Michelle Ameen came through with eerily realistic painting skills to create bloodied lab coat costumes, set pieces, and make up looks for
everyone. Brothers Sarah Mayer, Kayla Preston, Chris Taylor, and Sara Wu gave thrilling performances in the haunted house with the tutelage of then-pledge Andrew Kalender. Their efforts and the efforts of many other brothers combined to create a truly haunting experience that kept many event attendees coming back multiple times throughout the night.
Painting mini pumpkins in the pumpkin patch was a good option for people needing to calm their nerves after going through the haunted house. Brother Meena Manepalli went the extra distance to obtain enough pumpkins for all attendees and organize painting supplies. Everyone enjoyed making their own pumpkins and taking them home at the end of the night as an event souvenir. However, they were soon distracted by the costume contest. The costume contest was also a hit, attracting characters from a Valkyrie, to
Dionysus, to Cosmo and Wanda from The Fairly Odd Parents. Brother Emily Almand organized an entertaining gauntlet of judging events for competition contestants, which ended in a tie between the Valkyrie and Wanda. Although prizes were awarded to both winners, the real prize was the fun everyone had cheering them on in the competition.
After the competition, attendees were able to replenish their energy at the concessions area, where brother Izzy Won ensured a variety of healthy foods and decadent Halloween-themed treats. Brother Ada Jutba and then pledge Melanie Perez-Montoya made Frankenstein and jack-o-lantern fruit cups, while brothers Emmy Gibbons and Emily Harman baked adorable ghost cupcakes. Izzy ensured those and the many other foods, snacks, and drinks provided were carefully labeled with ingredients to accommodate anyone with specific dietary needs or allergies, which was a thoughtful touch appreciated by attendees.
With food in hand, participants stopped by the student org tabling to learn about what different organizations on campus do. Brothers Thuyen Van and Erik Gomez were able to attract several student orgs, including Speech Pathology, IPhO, APhA-ASP, and Kappa Epsilon. In future years, tabling for health advocacy for disease states will also be added.
Throughout the night, attendees were also able to play fair games. Brothers Lucía Curihuamán and Jessica Truong spearheaded the games area, enlisting brothers and pledges to conceptualize and create Halloween-themed games. Ping-pong ball cup tosses, mummy bowling, and witch-hat ring tosses were available for unlimited playing by guests. They were also able to recruit
a Wii gaming system and set it up for Mario Kart races, which was especially popular.
Overall, Haunted Healthcare was a monumental task to take on. It fell during the busiest time of the semester with regards to classes and exams for most brothers. It was stressful, but by sticking together and supporting each other, the brothers of Delta Delta chapter were able to make it a success and make their mark on the UF College of Pharmacy. With the meticulous work of brother Isaac Haddy, Worthy Keeper of Finances, the event raised $846.40 in its first year and was a huge success.
