October 21, 2017
On the evening of October 21, 2017, the Delta Delta chapter came together once again for the second annual Haunted Healthcare benefiting St. Jude Children’s Hospital. After months of planning, contacting local businesses for donations, and crafting, our brothers transformed the once simple classroom courtyard to a spectacular Halloween festival. All guests were welcomed from students from the University of Florida’s College of Pharmacy, to faculty and staff, as well as student organizations who set up tabling explaining other involvement opportunities. Visitors and brothers of the chapter even brought out their dogs dressed up in costumes for some puppy play time.
Before Haunted Healthcare was a spectacular philanthropy event, it was a mere idea presented by Delta Delta’s first WMA, Jessica Pu. What started off as brainstorming for ideas, evolved into something much greater as we expanded out the roles of our incoming candidate class, defined new leadership roles within each component of the event, and not to mention a wonderful way for our chapter to be involved with St. Jude Children’s Hospital. After our successful first year, raising over $800, the greatest challenge was to increase the hype as we aimed for our new goal of $1000.
Although the brothers all volunteer countless hours into the planning, building, and advertising of Haunted Healthcare, it wasn’t until we opened the ticket stands at the entrance of the courtyard that the Delta Delta’s light shone. As flocks of students, families, and staff flooded in, they were entranced, wide with grins about the marvel Halloween spectacular that presented before them. The evening was filled with flashes of cameras at the photo booth comprising props galore, cheers from a little bit of friendly competition at the carnival game styled booths, colorful strokes and creative minds at work at the pumpkin painting patch, and munching on some spooky sweet treats at the donation-based concession stand.
Once the sun set, guests headed through the Hall of Screams towards the Delta Delta Thriller Movie Haunted House. Each room themed different the next, brothers strung flickering lights, played clips from the classic horror films, and transformed into zombies to terrify the socks off of any guests who entered. By the end of the night, with ticket sales, donations, and concession sales, the University of Florida Phi Delta Chi Chapter raised $1067, all of which to be donated to St. Jude.
